Green yaupon tea is forgiving — steep longer, re-steep your leaves, or adjust the quantity to your palate. Fresh water brings out the best flavor.
Hot Yaupon Tea
- 1 tbsp loose leaf or 1 tea bag
- 8–14 oz hot water (just below boiling, around 212°F)
- Steep 4–6 minutes
- Re-steep up to three times — the first steep releases the most caffeine
Iced Yaupon Tea
- 5 tbsp loose leaf, 10 tea bags, or an iced tea sack
- Steep in 1 liter hot water for 10 minutes
- Add 1 liter cold water and ice
- Stays bright and clean when chilled — no bitterness, no added sweetener needed
Cold Brewed Yaupon Tea
- 5 tbsp loose leaf, 10 tea bags, or an iced tea sack
- 2 quarts cold water
- Steep 8–12 hours in the fridge
- The result is ultra-smooth with a naturally sweet, mellow finish
Pro tip: For a stronger brew, use more tea leaves rather than steeping longer. Green yaupon is impossible to over-steep, so you can leave it in the water all day without worry.
When we say sustainable, we mean every step of our process is designed to benefit our land, our harvesters, our partners, and our customers.
Wild-Grown and Sustainably Harvested. Our green yaupon grows naturally across 1,100 acres in its native Texas environment — no monoculture farming, no irrigation, no replanting required. Unlike South American cousins like yerba mate that require extensive cultivation, yaupon thrives on rainwater and sunshine alone.
Low-Impact Processing. No water is added during harvest or processing, and our facilities are powered by solar energy. Our packaging is fully recyclable or compostable.
People-First Harvesting. Our harvesting program includes a second-chance employment initiative, creating meaningful, dignified work for individuals who face barriers to employment. Some of our harvesters have been with us for over a decade.
Regenerative by Nature. CatSpring's Grassland Restoration Initiative restores balance between native grasses and yaupon holly as we harvest — leaving the land healthier than we found it.

Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about our products at CatSpring Yaupon.
Yaupon holly (Ilex vomitoria) is the only naturally caffeinated plant native to North America, a South American cousin to yerba mate, but grown right here in Texas. Unlike traditional green tea, yaupon is naturally low in tannins, so it is smooth, never bitter, and impossible to over-steep. Unlike yerba mate, the flavor is lighter and the caffeine feel is gentler. Yaupon was consumed by indigenous peoples for centuries before being rediscovered as a modern American green tea.
Yes. Yaupon tea has far fewer tannins than traditional tea or coffee, making it one of the gentlest caffeinated options available. Many customers with sensitive digestion find it comfortable for daily drinking. Green yaupon also acts as a prebiotic to support beneficial gut bacteria.
CatSpring Yaupon is USDA Organic, Regenerative Organic Certified, FairWild Certified, Kosher, Go Texan Certified, and carries the Intertribal Agriculture Council's Made by American Indians trademark. The company is indigenous women-owned and fourth-generation Texan.
If you do not love your yaupon, CatSpring will send you a free shipping label so you can share your tea with someone you think will love it. The guarantee covers all domestic orders. Exclusions include depleted cartons, partial bundle returns, in-store purchases, third-party purchases, and international orders.
